Mr. James Dexter Smith, age 85, of Phenix City, formerly of Lanett passed away on Thursday, November 24, 2016 at the Cedar Ridge Assisted Living Facility in Clanton, Alabama.

Mr. Smith was born on June 22, 1931 in Lanett, Alabama to the late Dexter Lee Smith and Eula Mae Taylor Smith.

Mr. Smith was retired from the United States military after 22 years of service.  He served in the US Marines, the US Air Force, and the US Navy.  He was a devoted Christian, loved his church, and loved his dogs.  He was a man who never met a stranger.

Graveside services will be held on Tuesday, November 29, 2016 at 11:00A.M. EST at Oakwood Cemetery in Lanett.  The family will be receiving friends at the funeral home Monday evening from 6:00P.M. EST until 8:00P.M. EST. 

He is survived by his wife, Joanne Ruth Smith; children, James Michael (Kathy) Smith, Cathy (Rusty) Moore, Jeannie (Franklin) Taylor, Tracy Jo Smith; 9 grandchildren; several great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild.

He was preceded in death by his first wife, Martha Jean Smith and his son, Frazier Lee Smith.
