Mrs. Syble Strain Spears, age 88, of Lanett, Alabama died Monday, October 24, 2016, at Northside Hospital in Atlanta, Georgia.

Funeral Services will be held Thursday, October 27, at 2:00 PM EDT at Shawmut First Baptist Church in Valley, Alabama with Rev. Chuck Anderson and Rev. Mark McGee officiating. Burial will follow at Marseilles Cemetery in West Point, GA.

Mrs. Spears is survived by her husband of 68 years, William H. (Bill) Spears, two daughters, Angelia Spears Kaplan of Atlanta, GA. and Hilda Spears Jones and her husband Mike of West Point, GA., Six grandchildren, Will Jones (Jessie) of Fortson, GA., Katy Jones of West Point, GA., Natalie Kaplan, Stephen Kaplan (Helen), Mark Kaplan of Atlanta GA., and Leah Jones Parker (Tony) of Albemarle, N.C., and one great granddaughter, Allie Easley of Albemarle, NC.

Born May 19, 1928 in Woodland, AL, she was the daughter of the late P.K. Strain and Lois McCarter Strain.

Mrs. Spears had been a resident of the Valley and West Point Area since 1950. She was an active member of Shawmut First Baptist Church and had faithfully served her churches for more than 50 years. She retired in 1988 from Dr. Charles Brazeal Optometry where she was employed for 20 years as an Optometrist Assistant. 

She spent her 28 years of retirement volunteering for community services, particularly the West Point Senior Center and Chattahoochee Hospice where she practiced her quilting skills for fund raising and other patient services. She was active in the Annual Relay for Life cancer fundraiser and became a cancer survivor in 2012. In 2014 she was nominated and elected as one of the Super Seniors in a program sponsored by the Circle of Care Center.

She loved watching her grandchildren growing up while sharing family get-togethers, camping, the mountains, the beach, or just gathering around the pool.

Mrs. Spears was preceded in death by her father, P.K. Strain, mother, Lois McCarter Strain, brother, Ray Strain, and sister Evelyn Strain Harlin.

The family will receive friends Wednesday, October 26, 2016 from 6:00P.M. EDT to 8:00P.M. EDT at the Johnson Brown Service Funeral Home in Valley.

Flowers will be accepted or donations may be made to Chattahoochee Hospice, Shawmut First Baptist Church or your favorite charity.
