Mr. Gene Smith, age 82, of Huguley, Alabama passed away on Friday, December 29th, 2017 at the Bethany House in Auburn, Alabama.

Mr. Smith was born in Chilton County, Alabama on September 11th, 1935 to the late Floyd Smith and Olene Glenn Smith.  He was also preceded in death by his brothers, Glenn Holland Smith and Charles Smith.

Mr. Smith was worked in and retired from the Carter-Lanier Mill and the Lanett Mill, where he was a supervisor in the weaving room.   After his retirement, he went on to work for 15 years at King Ford in Valley. 

Gene was a member of the Happy Valley Baptist Church and spent much of his time volunteering for the church on several projects.

Gene loved his family and was a wonderful husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. 

He enjoyed gardening, yard work, helping others with their yard work, woodworking, and fishing.  He often spoke of the time he spent fishing with his father in his younger years.

He is survived by his wife, Dorothy Smith; children, Gail (Ed) Meek, Opelika, Cindy (John) Ellison, Huguley, Cherie (Ray) Hall, Opelika, Donna (Bobby) Abney, Huguley, Mona Scott, Michigan, Randy (Linda) Smith, Opelika, Kendon (Lisa) Smith, Valley; 18 grandchildren; 20 great-grandchildren; 4 great great-grandchildren; two very close and special friends, Chong and Damon.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, January 2nd, 2018 at 2:00P.M. EST at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home chapel in Valley with interment following in Johnson Memorial Gardens.  The Reverend Rusty Letson officiating.  His family will be receiving friends at the funeral home on Tuesday from 1:00P.M. EST until the service hour.

Following the committal service, friends and family are invited back to the Happy Valley Baptist Church for a meal and fellowship.
