Mrs. Mary Terry Fetner, age 92, of the Shawmut Community of Valley, passed away on Sunday, September 15th, 2019 at the EAMC Lanier Nursing Home in Valley.

Born on November 27th, 1926, Mary was the fourth child of William H. and Lillian Glass Terry of Shawmut.  She graduated from Valley High School in Fairfax, Alabama in 1945.  On August 28th, 1948 she married Gwin E. Fetner of Roanoke, Alabama and they settled down and enjoyed their years together in Shawmut.

Shortly after graduating from high school, she began working in clerical positions at Langdale Mill and soon moved to the Shawmut Mill where she worked as a secretary to Mr. L. F. Underwood, Personnel Manager, and later became the assistant to Personnel Manager, Mr. Wayne Roughton. She retired from West Point Pepperell after 45 years of service.  Following her retirement, she worked for two years as a part-time employee for H & R Block.

During her years of retirement, she enjoyed quilting, the Atlanta Braves Baseball games, traveling with her friends, served as a volunteer at Lanier Memorial Nursing Home , Red Cross Blood Drives, took part in the Valley Community Senior Games where she enjoyed playing Rook, Dominoes, Ping Ball, Shuffleboard and other activities and has an abundance of medals from these games. 

Mary was a lifetime member of Shawmut Baptist Church where early on, she taught Sunday School and until her health started to decline, sang in the choir.  She was also a member of the Little Boston Club of Shawmut.

Mary is survived by one sister, Ms. Janice Dallas of West Point, Georgia; two sisters-in-law, Ms. Judy Scales Terry of Columbus, Georgia and Ms. Margie Smith Terry of Montgomery, Alabama.  She is also survived by 14 nieces, 6 nephews, and many great and great-great nieces and nephews.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Gwin E. Fetner; three sisters, Madge Terry Van Houton, Sybil Terry Holmes, and Patsy Terry DeLoach; four brothers, John D. Terry, James L. Terry, Roy H. Terry, and Maj. Ret. Danny C. Terry, all who had served their country in branches of the Army and Air Force.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, September 17th, 2019 at 11:00A.M. EDT at the First Baptist Church of Shawmut with the Reverend Chuck Anderson and the Reverend Mark McGee officiating.  The family will be receiving friends at the church on Tuesday from 10:00A.M. EDT until the service hour. Interment will follow in Shawmut Cemetery.

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorials be made in her memory to the First Baptist Church of Shawmut.
