Barbara Jean McGinnis, a cherished matriarch and source of love and kindness, passed away peacefully on July 9, 2025, in Opelika, Alabama, surrounded by the warmth of her family. Born on January 5, 1946, in Langdale, Alabama, Barbara's life was a story of devotion to her loved ones and an unwavering spirit of generosity.
Barbara, lovingly referred to as the cornerstone of her family, is survived by her son, Mark McGinnis, and her adored grandsons, Michael (Chrissy), Macabe (Ali), and McKeyan (Ardian) McGinnis. Her legacy continues to flourish through her great-grandchildren, Blakley, Harrison, Cade, and Marie Claire McGinnis, as well as several cherished nieces and nephews. Each of them was touched by her loving guidance and nurturing heart.
Barbara was preceded in death by her beloved husband, Larry McGinnis, her son, Kyle McGinnis, and her parents, Margaret and O. M. Barron. Her siblings, Henry Barron, Jeff Barron, and Elaine Fincher, also predeceased her, leaving a space in the family that Barbara lovingly filled with her steadfast presence.
In years past, Barbara alongside her husband Larry, poured her heart into their bakery, Sweets and Treats, in Valley, Alabama, serving the community not only with delectable treats but with warmth and a ready smile. Her commitment to her faith was evident as a member of Shawmut Christian Church, where she found strength and fellowship.
Known for her immaculate home and garden, Barbara took pride in creating a welcoming space that reflected her loving nature. Her grandchildren especially knew her as the consummate caregiver, enjoying her presence and the safe haven she provided. Barbara's interests were bound by her love for her family and by the joy she found in keeping a beautiful home where memories were made and cherished.
Described as loving, kind, and thoughtful, Barbara's influence was felt not only within the walls of her home but throughout her community. She was undeniably the matriarch of her family—a guiding light whose warmth, tenderness, and thoughtful nature shaped the lives of those who knew her.
Funeral services for Barbara will be held on Monday, July 14th, 2025, at 2:30 PM (EDT) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Interment will follow in Langdale Cemetery. The Reverend Rusty Letson will officiate. Barbara’s family will receive friends Monday afternoon at the funeral home from 1:30 PM (EDT) until the service hour.
