Bernadine Horne Obituary

Bernadine Horne, 64, very peacefully passed away on April 13, 2024, in Charleston, South Carolina surrounded by her mother, daughter, granddaughter, grandson, son in law, soon to be grandson in law and a room full of people who have become family over these years. She was born on September 30, 1959 in Valley, Alabama to Clarence B. Horne Sr & Virgie M. Horne, as the second of their three children.

Bernadine’s vibrant personality and loving nature made her well loved by all who had the pleasure to cross her path. She loved animals of all kinds, instilling and nurturing that love in her daughter and granddaughter as well. Not shying away from an adventure, she would try just about anything once, sometimes more just to make sure that it was not for her; like snow skiing and being so bad at it, getting permanently banned from 4 different ski resorts in 2 different states or moving to Saudi Arabia incidentally the day Kuwait was invaded in 1990. No matter if the adventures took her halfway across the world, to the mountains or to the most magical place on Earth, to her, the best part werethe memories she made with her family.

Of all the adventures and all the places that Bernadine experienced, her heart belonged to the beach. So, after some life changes, she moved from Charlotte to join her daughter in Charleston, SC. It was there that the two of them had some amazing adventures together before they embarked on the most wonderfully life changing adventure yet, becoming a family of 3 when her adored granddaughter came along.

While she had a few nicknames she was known by like Bern or Bernie, the one she cherished beyond all others and became the most known by was “Yaya,” a name bestowed on her by her granddaughter (Morgan)when she young. Bernadine fiercely loved all her family but her grandkids held a very special place in her heart; her and her granddaughter were two peas in a pod, her grandson was the light of her life.

Bernadine is survived by her mother, Virgie M. Horne; her daughter, Rachel (Joseph) Hammock; her grandchildren, Morgan Allen and Markus Hammock; her brother, Clarence B. Horne Jr; her much loved constant canine companion Saffron and many friends and family.

She was preceded in death by her beloved father, Clarence B. Horne Sr., and sister Virgie Juanita Horne; long-term partner, Dennis M. Coker; and a bevy of cherished pets that we have no doubt were overjoyed to see her so unexpectedly at the Rainbow Bridge.

Services and interment will be held on Saturday May 4th at 2:30pm (EDT) at Fairfax Cemetery. Jay Ezell will officiate. A Celebration of Life will follow at the home of Robert & Julia Foster.
