Bobby Gene Crutchfield, age 82, passed away at UAB hospital on Sunday, July 20th after a year long illness. He was a loving husband, devoted father, cherished grandfather/poppy, and dear friend to many.
Born in Langdale on April 23, 1943, Bobby lived a life filled with generosity for his friends and family. He was known for his loyal friendships and kindness shown through acts of service to his family members and community. He was of the Baptist Faith and served for many years as a deacon of Valley First Baptist church. He enjoyed singing in the choir.
Bobby graduated from Valley High School and then attended NC State before graduating from Auburn University where he attained a degree in textile engineering. He worked for West Point Pepperell, later Johnston Industries, as a respected industrial engineer. He approached every task with diligence and integrity.
In his free time and after retirement, Bobby enjoyed fishing with his childhood friend and golfing with his brother. He found joy in working in his yard and helping family and friends with projects. Bobby was known for his competitive spirit as a ball player and was an avid Auburn fan. He found solace in nature and was known for taking pride in his yard and plants. He loved talking to his lifelong friends about his love of the Langdale community, the river, favorite authors, and his love of learning.
He is preceded in death by his parents Eugene ( Red) and Edith Crutchfield of Langdale, Al.
He is survived by his brother Larry ( Candy ) Crutchfield of West Point, Ga. Bobby will be dearly missed by his beloved wife Carolyn Mitchum Crutchfield, his children Robbye ( Galen ) Smith of Lanett, Al., Chad ( April) Crutchfield of Lagrange, Ga., grandchildren Madyson ( Andrew) Manning of Addison, TX, CJ ( Sara ) Crutchfield of Riverview, Al., Carson ( Bridget ) Wasowski of Charlotte, NC, Jacob ( April ) Crutchfield of Huguley, Al., Elizabeth Crutchfield of Valley, Al., Mitchum Smith of Auburn, Al., Liam and Layla, great grandchildren Madi, Brycelyn, and Smith and many extended nieces, nephews, family and friends.
A Celebration of Life for Bobby Gene Crutchfield will be held at Johnson Brown Service Funeral Home Wednesday, July 23 at 2:30 PM EST, with visitation the hour before the service. Mark Sessions will officiate the service. He will be laid to rest at Langdale Cemetery overlooking the Chattahoochee that he loved all of his life. The family is accepting flowers, or donations can be made to The City of Valley Tree Board or H Grady Bradshaw Library.
Bobby's love and legacy will continue to live on in the hearts of all who knew him.
