Calvin C. Close, age 96, of Valley, Alabama walked through the valley of the shadow of death to dwell in the house of the Lord forever on Thursday, July 23rd, 2020. He was born on May 13th, 1924 in LaGrange, Georgia to the late Irene Robinson Hill.
Mr. Close is survived by his wife of 55 years, Betty Close; his nephew, Charles Vining; his special dog, Sassy.
He was preceded in death by his mother; son, Brian Close; sister, Coleen Vining; niece, Janice Deese; and several special aunts and uncles.
Mr. Close was a member of the Shawmut United Methodist Church where he was a longtime member of the Men’s Club. He was the oldest member of Shawmut United Methodist Church where he was an active member of the Senior Sunday School class and Bible study group. He was a member of the U.S. Army Air Corps during World War II; serving in Normandy, the Ardennes Forest, and Central Europe. He retired from West Point Pepperell’s Lanier Carter Mill after 23 years of service. He and his wife Betty were avid gardeners that were admired by many neighbors and friends.
Funeral services will be held on Sunday, July 26th, 2020 at 2:00 PM (EDT) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Interment will follow in Johnson Memorial Gardens. The Reverend Gerald Carnes will officiate. The family will receive friends Sunday afternoon from 1:00 PM (EDT) until the service hour. At the family’s request, attendees are asked to wear a mask and follow social distancing guidelines.
