We gather today to celebrate the life of Charles Monroe Pigg, a beloved father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, veteran, and friend, who passed away peacefully at his residence in Valley, Alabama, on July 31, 2025, at the impressive age of 93.
Born on March 28, 1932, in Chambers County, Alabama, Charles was a man of honor, dedication, and joy. His early years laid the foundation for a lifetime of service, including his commendable tenure as a Corporal in the United States Army. After his military service, Charles continued to serve his community and inspire many people as the recreation director for Langdale and Huguley with West Point Pepperell, where he was integrally involved in spreading holiday cheer with the annual merry-go-round, a highlight of the Christmas season for many.
In addition to his professional contributions, Charles dedicated 26 years to mentoring young athletes as an umpire for youth baseball and softball—an unmistakable sign of his commitment to influencing young lives positively. His impact rippled across generations, as he juggled the responsibility of nurturing his own growing family, which included his sons, Nathan (Deborah), Jackie (Diania), Byron (Shelia), and Alan (Claire).
Charles's legacy extended further through his loving grandchildren: Heather Nunley and her husband Doug, Jacob Pigg and Mary, Leah Thomas and Eric, Teresa Banks and Justin, Melissa Whitley, Patrick Pigg and Lauren, and Jacob Arthur with his spouse Maddy. His great-grandchildren Mason Nunley, Aria Banks, Marcus Whitley, Ray Lynn Thomas, Haydon Thomas, and Rylee Thomas, each carried a spark of their great-grandfather's spirit. His sister, Mary Ray, his very special friend of 26 years, Linda Williamson; a host of nieces and nephews also survive him, each bearing witness to the full, impactful life Charles led.
He was preceded in death by his wife of 42 years, Patsy Pigg; parents, Herman and Gladys Pigg; and sisters, Faye Beck, Katherine Butts, and Patricia Pigg.
An active congregant of the Langdale Methodist Church, a relentless supporter of the University of Alabama, and an enthusiastic participant in the Senior Masters Games of Alabama, Charles found joy in the fellowship and competition. His love for the outdoors, evident through his passion for hunting and fishing, was only matched by his unwavering kindness, his thoughtfulness towards others, and his friendly demeanor, which won him the hearts of many.
Today, we reflect on a life well-lived and the many ways Charles made our world a kinder, more enjoyable place.
Funeral services for Charles will be held on Monday, August 4th, 2025, at 11:00 AM (EDT) at Langdale Methodist Church. Interment will follow in Langdale Cemetery. Pastor Todd Owen will officiate. The family will receive friends Sunday evening from 6:00 until 9:00 PM (EDT) in the Langdale Methodist Church Family Life Center.
