Charles William Story Obituary

Charles William Story was born November 23, 1956 to the late William Milton “W.M.” Story and Anna Gibson Story in Langdale, Alabama and went to his Heavenly home on February 2, 2021.  He was preceded in death by brother, Bobby Hughdon Grant Sr., his infant son Brian Charles Story, and infant granddaughter Adriana Story. He is survived by wife Beverly Potts Story, son William Paul Story (Ashley), daughter Allyson Story Brandt (Jaysen), and his grandchildren Aiden William, Alix-Paul Joseph, Addison Claire, Charles Douglas, Maximus Jaysen, Liliana Grace, and Isabella Rose.

Charles graduated from Valley High School as a member of the ‘Class of 1975’ and happily continued volunteering in the school as the boisterous voice of the “Pride of the Valley” band for over 20 years. Furthermore, he was a man of many talents who had a passion for helping others in their time of need. Charles fought through many years of pain and trials that allowed him to have a testimony of the strength and resiliency of God’s faith. He lovingly served his community first by working alongside his dad, “W.M.” Story on the rescue squad and then as an emergency medical technician. He went on to be among the first graduating class at Craigs Field Police Academy and became a police officer with the city of Lanett and was one of the first officers in the city of  Valley in which he progressed to the rank of Captain. Through his service in the police force, he humbly advocated for local youth as a D.A.R.E. officer and was an active member of the Fraternal Order of Police. Following his career as a police officer, Charles was appointed as the first City Manager for the City of Valley. He continued to honorably serve his community by being elected as the Circuit Clerk of Chambers County for 18 years before retiring. In his retirement, Charles further served his community as a distinguished member of the Charter Foundation, Chamber of Commerce, and Bradshaw Library Board.

Moreover, Charles was surrounded by family and friends as he pursued his many hobbies and passions of watching Alabama football, bowling, fishing with his buddy Mike, riding his Harley, and most importantly, ministering through song. Charles, Ronnie “Spanky” Sanders, and Paul Story were the radio personalities on “The Southern Gospel Review” and Charles worked alongside Carey Carroll with other personalities on “The Southern Gospel Jubilee” television program. He was blessed to be able to share his love for Christ through singing alongside his peers: The Redd Brothers, Sounds of the Trumpet, The Heritage Quartet, and most recently The James Brown Trio with Adam and Teel Traylor. Charles also gratefully filled in with the Dove Brothers, Georgia Melody Boys, Brown Brothers, and more. His love for laughter was contagious. He has now ventured on to his long-awaited greeting with his Lord and Savior. May God’s love and Charles’ lightheartedness and passion for serving others continue to spread throughout our community.
