Mrs. Dorothy Smith passed away at the age of 83 on May 29, 2020 at the McLaren Hospital in Lansing, Michigan. She was born in Chambers County on July 27, 1937 to parents John Ocie and Lula Belle. Her Dad often referred to her as “Dinkey”. She lived most of her life in the Huguley community and moved to Michigan in February 2020. She had been in declining health for several years.
She enjoyed singing Southern Gospel music with her daughter, Cindy, cooking, working in her yard and house. She also collected bird houses. She was a member of Hopewell United Methodist Church.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Eugene Smith; her parents; two brothers, a stepson, and one grandson.
She is survived by two daughters, Cindy Ellison (John) and Donna Abney (Bobby), both from Huguley; one son, Kendon Smith (Lisa) from Valley; two stepdaughters, Gail Meeks (Ed) and Cheri Hall (Ray), both from Opelika; one sister, Betty Mason from Valley; ten grandchildren; six great grandchildren; and three great-great grandchildren; a niece, several cousins, and a host of friends.
She will be greatly missed by all who knew her. Our loss is Heaven’s gain.
Funeral services will be held on Monday, June 8th, 2020 at 11:00 AM (EDT) at the graveside in Johnson Memorial Gardens in Valley. The family will receive friends in the cemetery following the service.
