Mr. Ernest Anthony McLeroy (78) of Valley, AL passed away peacefully at East Alabama Medical Center in Opelika, AL on November 28, 2023, surrounded by his loving family. Ernest was born to Barnard (Mac) and Dorothy (Dot) McLeroy in LaGrange, GA on November 17, 1945. He grew up in the Louise community where he made life-long friends. Ernest graduated from Troup County High School in LaGrange.
Ernest proudly served in the United States Air Force during the Vietnam War from May 1966- March 1970. He was stationed at Eglin Air Force Base in Okaloosa County, FL. As a technical sergeant, he specialized in helicopter electronics and navigation systems. Ernest earned a bachelor’s degree in mathematics from LaGrange College and a master’s degree in computer science from Auburn University. He spent most of his professional career as a computer programmer for WestPoint Stevens, which is where he met his wife, Faye.
Ernest was a devout Christian who served the Lord above all else. He was a member of New Unity Church, where he served as a deacon for many years and played the guitar during services. His love for the Lord reflected in many ways to many people.
Ernest was known for his intellectual aptitude and wit. He excelled at any subject in which he had interest. He was an avid reader of fiction and non-fiction alike, with a particular passion for westerns and history. Inspired by his Cherokee ancestry, he developed a deep adoration and exploration of Native American culture.
Ernest was also a gifted artist. He expressed his artistic skills through paintings, carved gourds, leatherwork, and any type of woodwork you could imagine. His musical talents included playing the guitar, piano, and harmonica. He became a student and practitioner of martial arts later in life, earning a brown belt in karate.
Ernest is survived by his wife Faye McLeroy; brother Tommy (Susie) McLeroy; sons Gregg (Beth) McLeroy and Chris Ogle; daughters Stacey (David) Wiggins, Angelia Ogle Weldon, and Kathy Ogle Hornsby; grandsons Griffin McLeroy, River Weldon, Ashton Weldon, and Hunter Hornsby; granddaughters Morgan (AJ) Riffe, Raya McLeroy, and Lindsey (Logan) Clifton; and several nieces, nephews, grandnieces, and grandnephews.
