James E. "Jim" Young Obituary

     Mr. James E. “Jim” Young, age 96, of Lanett passed away on January 9th, 2025, at his residence.

     Funeral services will be held on Wednesday, January 15th, 2025, at 2:30 PM (EST) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Burial will follow in Hillcrest Gardens. Jim’s family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon at the funeral home from 1:30 PM (EST) until the service hour.

     Mr. Young is survived by his two sons, Mark E. Young (Diane) and Thomas R. Young (Barbara) and Daughter in law Mary Young; six grandchildren, Jimmy Young (Amy), Katie Leiser (Brian), Justin Young (Christin), Brandon Young, Caryn Porretta (Andy), and Daniel Young (Jen); six great grandchildren, Asa, Ezra, Lainey, Elijah, Dianna, and Olive; niece, Bonnie Bryan. He was preceded in death by his wife, Barbara Beard Young; son, James H. Young; and parents.

     Mr. Young was born on May 17th, 1928, in Buffalo, NY to the late Edward and Helen Young. He was a member of the West Point First United Methodist Church, where he enjoyed singing in the Choir. He attended schools in Buffalo, entered the National Guard and was at West Point Academy on special duty. He then entered the regular Army, Fourth Division as a Staff Sergeant during the Cold War in Europe and was a Korean War Veteran.

     In 1952 he married Barbara Beard of Lanett, AL and then moved to Buffalo, NY for 37 years. There he was a tailor and owned his own business. His achievements and awards over the years include Past President of the Businessmen’s Association, Rotary President, Chairman of the Prodicent Comm. on Scouting. He was a District Commissioner of Scouting for 18 years, received the God and Service Award from his church and scouting, was awarded the Silver Beaver Award, the highest award in the scouting council. He was a member of the Boy Scouts of America for 75 years. His three sons and one grandson are Eagle Scouts. He was trained in leadership at the Philmont, NM scout camp.

     In 1989 he and his wife moved back to Lanett. He was employed by Citizens National Bank for 10 years. He and his wife traveled a great deal, seeing all 50 States and Canada from East to West coasts.
