Janice Kilgore Russell, known affectionately as "Janice" or "Jan" to her friends and family, passed away peacefully on February 4, 2025, at the age of 80 in Opelika, Alabama. Born on November 21, 1944, in West Point, Georgia, Janice was a beacon of love and kindness to all who knew her. Janice's life was one of unwavering devotion to her family and an embodiment of generosity and warmth.
She is survived by her loving sons, Steven (Delaine) Gibson and Randall (Caron) Gibson; her sister, Patricia Anglin; her brother, Butch Kilgore; her cherished grandchildren, Tommy (Tiffany) Gibson, Travis (Lauren) Gibson, and Haylie Gibson; and her adored great-grandchildren, Kason Gibson and Oliver Gibson. Janice also leaves behind numerous nieces and nephews who will miss her dearly. She was preceded in death by her parents, H.G. and Molly Kilgore; her brother, Jimmy Kilgore; and her beloved husband, Tom Russell.
Janice's life was marked by her creative spirit and her love for the arts. She found joy in making arts and crafts, a talent that she lovingly shared with her family and friends. Sewing was not just a hobby for Janice; it was a way to express her love and care, as she often gifted her handmade treasures to those she held dear. Her creativity was a testament to her ability to find beauty in the everyday and to share that beauty with the world.
The Christmas holidays held a special place in Janice's heart. She reveled in the festive spirit of the season, and her home was always a welcoming haven of holiday cheer. Her love for the Hallmark channel was well-known, as she enjoyed the heartwarming stories that mirrored her own values of love and family.
Janice held her faith closely in her life. She raised her children, Steve and Randy, in the church, and she was a Sunday School teacher for many years, Janice attended Friendship Christian Church, faithfully, until she was no longer able to attend. She was an integral part of the church family and the church's history.
Above all, Janice cherished the time spent with her grandchildren. Each moment with them was precious, and she instilled in them the values of love, kindness, and generosity. Her influence will live on in the lives of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who will carry forward her legacy of compassion. Janice was a very loving and giving person, always putting others before herself. Her kind heart and generous spirit were the hallmarks of her character.
Those who had the privilege of knowing Janice will remember her for these qualities, and her memory will continue to inspire acts of kindness and love in the community she so dearly impacted. Janice Kilgore Russell's life was a beautiful tapestry woven with love, kindness, and generosity.
As we say goodbye to this remarkable woman, we celebrate the enduring impact she has made on the lives of so many. Her spirit will forever be cherished, and her memory will remain a guiding light to all who were blessed to know her. Janice's family takes comfort in knowing that her legacy of love will continue to flourish in the hearts of those she touched.
Funeral services for Janice will be held on Friday, February 7th, 2025, at 11:00 AM (EST) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Interment will follow in Harmony Memorial Park Cemetery. The Reverend Steve York will officiate. Janice’s family will receive friends Friday one hour prior to the service at the funeral home from 10:00 AM (EST) until the service hour.
