Jerry Carmack Obituary

We come together to celebrate the life of Jerry Carmack, a beloved educator, family man, and pillar of his community, who departed this world peacefully on October 21, 2024, in Opelika, Alabama. Born in a cozy home in Notasulga, Alabama, on December 24, 1946, Jerry spent his life devoted to his loved ones and to the many students whose lives he enriched over his long career in education.

Jerry’s legacy of laughter and learning leaves a lasting imprint on the hearts of those he touched. With intelligence, friendliness, and kindness at the core of his character, he built a life that was both impactful and cherished. Jerry was a dedicated member of the Happy Valley Baptist Church for over four decades, where his commitment and humor brightened countless lives.

His career as an educator is remembered with fondness and respect. He upheld the belief that structure and discipline, notably through his unique use of time tables, could shape the young minds of his students at Temple Christian School and beyond. Even after his retirement, Jerry continued to be a guiding light for students and often reminisced fondly of his teaching days during chance encounters with former pupils in various walks of life.

Family was Jerry's greatest joy. He embodied the role of a loving husband to his wife, Janis Carmack, a supportive father to his daughter, Mandy Atkins, and her husband Daniel, and a doting grandfather to Ethan and Anabelle Atkins. His brother Jeffrey Carmack, alongside his wife Lynn, will fondly remember the warmth and love he shared. While preceded in death by his parents, Florence and Marshall Carmack, as well as his brothers, Gene and Ronnie Carmack, the family remains a testament to the love and values Jerry held dear.

His hobbies reflected his multifaceted nature, from the care given to his fur babies, the strokes of his drawing pen, to the generosity extended to friends and strangers alike. Jerry Carmack lived a life where every action and every word was an embodiment of his heart's teachings. He was a man who showed by example that the good we do echoes in eternity, and his memory will continue to inspire all who had the privilege of crossing his path.

Funeral services for Jerry will be held on Wednesday, October 23rd, 2024, at 2:30 PM (EDT) at Happy Valley Baptist Church. Interment will follow in Harmony Memorial Park Cemetery. The Reverend John Samanie will officiate. Jerry’s family will receive friends Wednesday afternoon at the church from 1:30 PM (EDT) until the service hour.
