We gather today to fondly remember and celebrate the life of Luther Hutchins, affectionately known to all as Jr., who graced this world with his presence on September 19th, 1935, and departed from it on September 6th, 2024, just shy of his 89th birthday. Born at home in Fairfax, Alabama, Jr. lived a vibrant life until his peaceful passing in Auburn, Alabama.
Jr. was surrounded by a loving family, including his son, Jeff Hutchins (Tina); daughter, Sue Hutchins Sessums (Bo); and his cherished grandchildren, April Hutchins, Josh Hutchins (Brittney), Robin Parrish Croft (Billy), Adam Parrish (Sarah), Nikki Roell (Brandon), and Jordan Sessums. His legacy continued through his great-grandchildren, Maggie Rennie; Jackson and Landon Hutchins; Grady and John Luke Parrish; Dottie Parrish; Hunter and Ronnee Croft; Ashley Michael; and Kenzie and Blake Roell; great-great grandchild, Addison Michael. A treasured friend to many, Jr. had a special bond with his friend Wanda Phipps. He was preceded in death by his beloved wife of 62 years, Jewell Hutchins, and by his parents, two sisters and three brothers, leaving a legacy of laughter and kinship.
Jr. found joy in the simple pleasures of life. He spent many hours tending to his yard, a testament to his love for the outdoors and creating beauty around his home. Yard sales were cherished events when shared with his wife, and together they created countless precious memories. A family man at heart, Jr.'s greatest pride was in the love and connection he held for each of his family members.
An ardent supporter of Alabama football, a fan of classic westerns and wrestling, Jr. cherished his relaxing moments with full enthusiasm. His trips to Daniel’s Drive Inn for a hamburger layered with extra onions were the stuff of happy routines. Jr.'s sense of humor, friendly demeanor, and kind-heartedness set him apart as the quintessential prankster, who lived to share joy and laughter with everyone around him.
Words simply cannot encapsulate the entirety of a man like Jr. Hutchins. He was not just funny, friendly, and kind; he was a beacon of joy in the lives of those who knew him. He will be remembered with smiles on our faces and warmth in our hearts, as a man who truly loved and was deeply loved in return.
