Julian Lee Wood

     Julian Lee Wood, 93, of Huguley, Alabama died peacefully at his residence on Monday, September 2nd, 2024. He was born to the late Ocie and Minnie Howard Wood on November 11th, 1930, in Clay County.

     He is survived by his wife of 73 years, Frances L. Wood of Huguley; son, Terry R. Wood (Joyce) of Valley; daughter-in-law, Marie Wood of Valley; God son, Gerald Lowery (Janice) of Mableton, Ga.; grandchildren, Johnny L. Wood, Jr. (Carrie), Misty Gibson (Ronald), Terry R. Wood, Jr. (Jetta), Lou Buckner (Jody), Amanda McClain (Stephen), Brent Wood (Melissa), Chad Daniel (Ashley); eighteen great grandchildren and six great-great grandchildren; brother, Clifford Wood (Betty) of Mississippi; sister, Mary J. Stevison (Jerry) of Anchorage, AK; sister-in-law, Jerri Wood of Pine Mt.; several nieces and nephews.

     He was preceded in death by his parents, siblings, Robert Wood, Frances Keafer, Minnie L. Humphrey, Elven Rudd, Jessie Wood; children, Johnny L. Wood, Sr., Shirley Smith; grandchildren, Pamela Smith and Steven Ray Wood; great grandchildren, Gracie McClain and Steven Kyle Watson.

     He served as a deacon in several churches for many years. The last three were Fairfax Congregational, Ridge Road Baptist, and acting deacon at Midway Baptist Church. His life was and is a testimony wherever he went and whatever he did. He loved the Lord and would praise Him in everything he did. Anything he did for the Lord and the church, he gave his all, whether building a church, cleaning it or cutting grass. He served as a song leader for years. He also traveled many miles to sing in the gospel group, Destiny.

     He was a contractor by trade, and he loved building things. He could look at something and go home and build it. He built things from wind spinners to furniture and houses. His greatest accomplishment, besides Family, was when he had a vision and design to build Ridge Road Baptist Church and Fellowship Hall. He even travelled to Alaska to help build a shed and porch.

     He also loved to plant his gardens every year. They would can and freeze fruits and vegetables and share them with family and friends. Though he only attended grammar school, the Lord blessed him abundantly with wisdom and knowledge. He would not tend to anyone’s business unless you asked for his opinion, and you had better be ready to accept his response.

     He was and always will be a shining light in the communities and places he went. Whenever you hear the song “The Great Speckled Bird”, think of him and smile.

     Funeral services for Mr. Wood will be held on Thursday, September 5th, 2024, at 2:00 PM (EDT) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home Chapel in Valley. Interment will follow in Harmony Memorial Park Cemetery. Pastor Terry Wood will officiate. Mr. Wood’s family will receive friends Wednesday evening from 6:00 until 8:00 PM (EDT) at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley.
