Lewis Austin Smith

     Lewis Austin Smith, 90, passed peacefully from this realm into Heaven on January 13th, 2020.

     Lewis was born on December 28th, 1929 to Ruben Franklin Smith and Irene Story Smith.  Lewis was preceded in death by his parents; sister, Janet McWhorter; brothers, James R. Smith, Harold D. Smith, Bernard Smith, and Durwood Leon Smith.  He was also preceded by his wife, Nell McClendon Smith; grandson, James Michael Morrell; and son-in-law, Timothy Michael Kirkland.

     Lewis is survived by three daughters, Sue Smith Morrell, Alisa Kay Smith, and Karen Leigh Smith of Lanett, AL.  He is also survived by grandchildren, Ian (Cynthia) Welch of West Point, GA, Jennifer Megan Morrell (Matt Odom) and Mason  Durwood Morrell of Lanett, AL, Joy Schmidt (Anthony) Callaway of Gulfport, MS, Erin Leigh (Darren) Leva of Lanett, AL, and Amee Linn Kivette (Jeremy) Wilson of Auburn, AL.  Lewis was blessed with five great-grandchildren, Bethany Rahne Welch, Dustin Baker, Jr., Felicity Lynne Kivette, Elijah Michael Morrell, and Emmaleah Morrell.  Lewis also leaves behind his sister, Ms. Laura Bidmead of Forrest Park, GA; a host of nieces and nephews, among them, Lee (Beverly) Smith and their daughter, Misty (Todd) Moore of Valley, AL.

     For the past two years of his life Lewis lived at Valley Park Manor where he had a multitude of friends and a very special friend, Ms. Louise Williams.  Ms. Williams has been a wonderful companion since they met at Valley Park Manor.  He loved his friends and the Administrators, Ms. Amber Griggs, and Ms. Beverly Smith.  Lewis was well cared for by the staff at Valley Park Manor and he especially cherished his care giver, Ms. Joyce Coad.

     Lewis served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict as a medic.  Upon discharge from service, Lewis became employed as a meat cutter in various local stores.  His favorite place of employment was Givorns’ Foods in West Point, GA.  Here he enjoyed working with Ms. Shelvie Givorns, Mr. Ricky Scott, and Ms. Billie Jean Bartlett before his retirement.  After his retirement, Lewis loved to spend time camping and grilling with his dog Nikki.  He was a World War II buff and enjoyed watching Westerns and weekly Church services.

     A memorial service will be held at a later date.
