Mrs. Doris Imogene "Jean" Boyington Obituary

Doris Imogene “Jean” Boyington died Thursday, January 20th, 2022, in West Point, Georgia. She was 92. The funeral service will be held at St. John’s Episcopal Church in West Point, Georgia on Tuesday, January 25th, at 3:00 p.m. EST with The Reverend Roxane Gwyn officiating. Her family will be receiving friends at the Johnson Brown-Service Funeral Home in Valley Monday evening from 5:00P.M. EST to 7:00P.M. EST.

She was born on August 18th, 1929, in the Shawmut mill village to Bert and Flossie Burson White. Her older brother was the late King Dee White and her younger sister the late Geraldine Eleanor (Gerry) White Meacham. Jean loved life in Shawmut just off the Boulevard on Georgia Avenue. She enjoyed a large extended family and had a close relationship with her sister, Gerry. The family moved to Huguley in 1954 to live in a home built primarily by Jean’s father Bert and grandfather, the late Bill Burson.

St. John’s Episcopal Church was her church home for over 60 years. Jean served in various leadership roles in the church, including the Altar Guild and the Vestry. Each Sunday, she and sister Gerry could be found in their Sunday best seated in the front pew on the left.

Jean became a beautician in her late 20s and spent over 50 years cutting, washing, rolling and setting ladies’ hair. Women from all over the Valley went to Jean’s Beauty Shop, first in Lanett, and then in the family home in Huguley. Tuesday through Saturday, her two-dryer, one-chair shop was busy from 8:30 in the morning until 8:00 or later every night. The ladies may have started as clients, but most became longtime friends.

Jean and William Daniel (Dan) Boyington were married on November 26, 1976. Jean and Dan had known each other most of their lives. The marriage led to an immediate family of seven with Jean’s three children (Jay, Jessica, Sam) and two of Dan’s three sons (Randy, Gary). The family moved to Stillwater, Oklahoma in July 1978 when Dan accepted an offer from Oklahoma State University’s Photo Services department and Jean became a stay-at-home mom. Jean and Dan had a wonderful life together in Stillwater until his death on October 28, 1982. Jean, Jessica, and Sam returned to Huguley the following May.

Jean reopened her beauty shop in Lanett in 1983 before moving the shop back to Huguley. Many of her former customers happily returned and she continued ‘doing hair’ while building friendships for the next 32 years. Jean retired in 2015 due to health issues at the age of 86.

Jean will be remembered for her inner strength and determination that her physical challenges were not going to dictate how she lived. Her loving spirit touched many lives and created many life-long friendships. She had style, always looked good, and was loved herself for who she was.

She is preceded in death by her mother and father, brother and sister, and her husband Dan. She is survived by her son Jay Boyington and his wife Tracy (Go Pokes) of Stillwater, OK; daughter Jessica Boyington Casteel and her husband Doug (Go Dawgs) of West Point, GA; son Sam Boyington and his wife Mary (Roll Tide) of Huguley, AL; stepson Randy Boyington and his wife Janet of Stillwater, OK; and stepson Gary Boyington of Stillwater, OK; 11 grandchildren, seven great-grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews.

Serving as pallbearers will be nephews Kelly Meacham, Todd Meacham, and Patrick Meacham, with great-nephews Justin Meacham, John Meacham, Kevin Meacham, and Edward Cook.
