Mrs. Virginia H. Monk, age 94, of Fairfax, Alabama passed away on Monday, June 8th, 2020 at the Florence Hand Nursing Home in LaGrange, Georgia.
Mrs. Monk was born on July 14th, 1925 in Shawmut, Alabama to the late George Thomas Hollis and Bertha Jarrett Hollis.
She was also preceded in death by her husband, Walter C. Monk, Jr.; daughter, Jennifer Laura Monk; brother, Richard Hollis; sister-in-law, Virginia Hollis; nieces, Sharon Hollis, Patricia Hollis Crowley; great nephew, Jason Crowley.
Mrs. Monk was a member of the Fairfax United Methodist Church.
Virginia grew up with her brother Richard in Shawmut. As children, they enjoyed riding bicycles and taking care of their animals, which included dogs, cats, chickens and more.
In 1943, Virginia graduated from Shawmut High School where she was a model student. After graduation, she was employed by the West Point Pepperell Research Center in Shawmut where she worked as a secretary.
In 1954 she married the love of her life, Walter C. Monk, Jr. They moved to Fairfax, Alabama and were married for 61 years They raised two children, Jennifer Laura Monk and Walter C. Monk, III. Later she worked at the Auburn University Book Store for several years.
Virginia was an excellent cook, always taking dishes to people who were sick and to those in need. She was a skilled seamstress and made most of her own clothes. She also enjoyed working in their garden that was full of fruits and vegetables. They frequently had too much and would share with their neighbors and friends.
She enjoyed writing letters and would write to family and friends all over the United States. She kept up with everyone’s birthdays, anniversaries, graduations, making sure each got a card for each occasion.
She was a faithful member and served in many positions at the Fairfax United Methodist Church where she always had a smile for everyone. She taught Sunday school up until her eighties, spreading the love of Jesus Christ to many generations.
She dearly loved her family, friends, neighbors, and community. She was an extremely sweet, special lady and will be greatly missed. We want to thank everyone for all the support and letters over the years. Those letters meant more to her than anyone can imagine.
She is survived by her son, Walter C. Monk, III and his wife, Paula Pitts Monk; grandson, Brandon T. Monk; nephews, Allen Hollis, Chris Hollis, Lane Monk; nieces, Sharron Monk Aderon, Cindy Monk Munisteri, Gail George, Teresa Brown.
Graveside services will be held on Thursday, June 11th, 2020 at 2:00P.M. EDT at the Fairfax Cemetery in Valley, Alabama. The Reverend Paul Messer officiating.
