Wallace "June Bug" Workman, a cherished family man, respected boat racer, and beloved member of the Opelika community, passed away peacefully on February 15, 2024, at the age of 73. Born on October 7, 1950, in Huntsville, Alabama, Wallace was a man of intelligence, thoughtfulness, and an undeniable knack for fixing anything with his handy skills.
Wallace grew up in Huntsville, where he developed a love for the outdoors and a passion for life on the water. His adventurous spirit and competitive nature led him to the thrilling world of boat racing. He made a name for himself in this arena, achieving the pinnacle of his racing career in 1993 when he won the Outboard Drag Boat World Championship, a testament to his dedication and skill.
After his illustrious racing career, Wallace found solace in the simple pleasures of life. He was an avid fisherman, often found casting a line at his own lake, where he enjoyed the tranquility of nature and the thrill of the catch. Wallace was also an enthusiast of shooting sports, a pastime that allowed him to hone his precision and patience.
Known affectionately as “June Bug” by his family and friends, Wallace was also sometimes known as "Superman" by those closest to him. His love for the Superman legacy was more than a hobby; it was a reflection of the hero he was to his family and friends.
Wallace's legacy is carried on by his loving family, including his sons, Richard Workman and his wife Charity, and Brandon Workman; his grandchildren, Blake Smith and his wife Anna, and Holton Workman and his wife Kelsie; and his great-grandchild, Wallace Holton Workman, who carries his name into the next generation. He also leaves behind his brother, Bubba Waites, and his wife Faye. Wallace was preceded in death by his parents, Wallace Holton Workman, Sr. and Dorothy Taunton (Charlie), his daughter, Dorothy June Workman, and his brother, Denny Wayne Workman.
Wallace's life was a testament to the power of hard work, the importance of family, and the joy of pursuing one's passions. His intelligence shone through in every endeavor he undertook, and his thoughtful nature made him a pillar in the lives of those he touched. His ability to fix and create was not just a skill but a gift he generously shared with all.
