Mrs. Susan Batson Huguley died peacefully on Tuesday, May 24, 2016, at West Georgia Hospice in LaGrange, after 96 years of joyful living. The funeral service will be held at the First United Methodist Church of West Point, 306 East Seventh Street, West Point, Georgia on Friday, May 27, 2016 at 3 p.m. EDT, preceded by visitation at the church from 2:00P.M. (EDT) until 3:00P.M. (EDT) and followed by a graveside service at Marseilles Cemetery in West Point.   The Reverend John Mattox officiating.

Susan was born August 29, 1919, to John Thomas and Nora Viola Batson on their 50 acre farm in Lanett, Al., where she, her sister, and brothers enjoyed a peaceful childhood of country living. She attended primary school in West Point, and went to West Point High School. After graduation, Susan attended nursing school until her marriage to Alfred Zachry, and they started Zachry Hardware Store in downtown West Point. After a few short and busy years, her husband died unexpectedly, so she took over and singlehandedly ran the business successfully for several years, while raising her two young sons. When Susan married Amos Huguley, a partner in Huguley-Scott Ford-Mercury Dealership, she retired from the hardware business and devoted her life to her family and home. Susan and Amos were both avid golfers and enjoyed entertaining friends at their home in West Point.

Susan described herself as a “golf nut”, and played an excellent game long into her senior years. For many years, she won the Ladies Golf Tournament at the Riverside Country Club, where she was a Life Member. She also won the state championship of the Senior Women’s Golf Association three times. She travelled all around the world playing golf and making friends along the way. Five years ago she went to Hawaii for a tournament, and enjoyed flying around the islands by helicopter!

Susan volunteered at the George H. Lanier Hospital for many years, and was highly regarded for her service. She always loved gardening, and displayed her talent in the lovely grounds surrounding her home and various beautification projects in the community. She was an active member of the West Point Garden Club, and won many ribbons for her flower arrangements. Susan was a lifetime member of the First Methodist Church of West Point, where she taught Sunday school, and she was an active member of the West Point Pilot Club.

Other than her parents, Susan was preceded in death by husbands Alfred Zachry and Amos Huguley; as well as her sister Billie Batson Shields, and her brothers J.T. Batson, Rance Batson, and David Batson.

To cherish her memory, she leaves her sons Alfred Zachry (Linda) of Columbus and John Zachry of West Point; her grandson John Thomas Zachry of LaGrange and step-grandchildren Leah Slaughter of Denver, Co. and Will Slaughter of Atlanta; as well as many nieces, nephews and cousins.  Her spirit and zest for living will live on and be long remembered by other relatives and friends whose lives she touched.

Susan will be lovingly remembered as a delightful and generous lady, who lived life to the fullest.

In lieu of flowers, her family requests donations be made to First United Methodist Church – Meals on Wheels, 306 East Seventh Street, West Point, Ga. 31833
